Our Gold Award Heritage Project - 1890 Takapuna Home

In 2021, we won the Master Painters Gold Award for our restoration of this iconic 1890 Victorian home in Takapuna—one of the oldest homes in the area.

Key project details:

Built in 1890 for Caroline Green, passed through 5 generations
Original rough-sawn weatherboards, sash windows, and period features intact
Stripped back to bare timber as required
Sash windows fully restored and repainted
“An icon of Takapuna” – neighbours share stories of the home’s history daily

The House Painters found the home in a neglected state after years as separate flats. Paint on the sash windows was peeling and flaking, often exposing the original timber. The rough-sawn weatherboards had held up remarkably well and needed little attention, but the weatherboards on the front of the property were failing and were paint stripped back to bare timber so the new finish would last for generations. The weatherboards were then coated in Dulux Weathershield with MaxiFlex Technology, a flexible finish that moves with the timber as weather conditions change.
