New Zealand does not license house painters, so anyone can trade as one. Membership is applied for, assessed, and reviewed. It cannot be bought with a logo licence fee.
Master Painters New Zealand publishes its entry requirements. A business must have traded for at least 18 months before it can apply. It must put forward three recent jobs for review by the association’s field team, who inspect the actual work rather than photographs of it. And it must sign the association’s Code of Conduct, which binds members to honest pricing and professional dealings with clients.
Then there is the guarantee, the piece most homeowners have never heard of. Work by Master Painters members is covered by the association’s 5-Year Guarantee for necessary repairs or remedial work, with terms and conditions worth reading before the job starts. On a large exterior repaint the guarantee changes the risk equation: if the workmanship fails inside five years, there is a formal scheme to go back to, rather than a phone number that may or may not answer.
Membership also renews. A business that lets its standards slide answers to the association, and the assessment at entry is not the last time anyone looks. The Assessment
We visit the property and go over every detail. We measure, photograph, and put everything into The House Painters’ quoting system.
Most homeowners never see this part, and it is the part that decides everything else. The number is not something we arrive at standing in your driveway working out how we feel about the job. It comes out of measured area, priced against 25+ years of Auckland houses. It does not shift because the diary is empty this month, or because it is full.
Which is what makes it worth holding a competitor’s quote against. Two quotes on the same house, thousands of dollars apart, are not arguing about the price of paint. They are arguing about scope. One of them has counted it.

Housewashing
We wash the whole exterior down before anyone touches it with a tool.
Dirt, chalking and mould are not a cosmetic problem. Paint will not stick through them. Wash them off properly and the primer grips bare, sound surface. Leave them and you have laid an expensive coating system on top of a layer of dust, and it will let go inside a couple of years no matter what went on over it.
The detailed areas take the longest, because profiles and recesses trap everything the weather leaves behind. It is also the first thing skipped on a rushed job. From the footpath, nobody can tell.

Preparation
Where the paint has let go, we take it off. The PaintShaver Pro cuts the failing coating back to sound timber and pulls the dust straight off the blade into extraction, instead of throwing it across your property.
That matters more than it sounds. A house built before 1980 almost certainly has lead paint in its lower layers, and how those layers come off is decided up on the scaffold by whoever is holding the tool. Do it with a sander and no extraction and the lead dust goes into the garden, the deck and the soil your kids play in. You will not see it happen and you will not see it afterwards.
This is the work a Master Painters field inspection exists to look at. Somebody has to check it, because you cannot.
Paint that is still sound and well bonded stays where it is. We do not strip a house for the sake of it, and we do not coat over failing paint to save a day.

Filling & Priming
We sand it, prime it, and fill every defect before the topcoat goes anywhere near it. Nail holes, splits, joinery gaps, weatherboards. All of it.
Bare timber gets sealed with a proper timber primer, which does two jobs a topcoat cannot do at any price. It soaks into the timber and grips, and it blocks the tannin in the wood from bleeding up through the paint later. We use Resene Wood Primer or the Dulux Precision Stain & Mould Blocker depending on the system going over it.
This is the slowest part of the job. It is also the first thing a cheap quote drops, and the only part that vanishes completely when the job is finished.
When two Auckland quotes on the same house are thousands apart, this is usually where the money went. The problem is that on the day the scaffolding comes down, both houses look the same. You find out which one you bought in about two years.

The Finish
Two topcoats, everywhere, no exceptions.
Weatherboards go in Resene Sonyx 101 or Dulux Weathershield. It holds its colour under UV and it stays flexible, which matters more than most people realise: Auckland timber moves with the weather, and a rigid paint film cracks the first time the boards swell. Windows, doors and joinery go in Resene Enamacryl or Dulux Aquanamel, for a harder semi-gloss film on the surfaces that get handled, washed and rained on directly.
The finish sits on prepared timber. That is why it holds 7 to 10 years instead of lifting in two. It is also what makes the 5-Year Guarantee worth something — a guarantee is only as good as the preparation underneath it.
What does “standard painter” mean in New Zealand?
A standard painter in New Zealand is any person or business offering painting services without independent assessment, because the country has no compulsory licensing for painters. No registration is required, no qualification is checked, and no body reviews the work. Printing “professional painter” on a van is the entire barrier to entry.
That is not an insult to standard painters. Some skilled tradespeople in Auckland operate without any association membership, and some homeowners have used the same unaffiliated painter happily for twenty years. The point is structural, not personal. When nothing external verifies a painter, every claim on the quote is self-issued. “Fully insured” is self-issued. “20 years’ experience” is self-issued. “We prepare surfaces properly” is self-issued. Each claim may be true. You just have to establish that yourself, reference by reference, and most homeowners have no practical way to do it.
The place this bites hardest is aftercare. A standard painter’s guarantee is a promise from the same person whose work is in question, enforceable only through goodwill or the Disputes Tribunal. Your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act still apply, and they are real, but exercising them against a painter who has wound up the company or left the region is slow and often fruitless. There is no scheme behind the promise, no field team to call, no association with a reputation at stake.
