The House Painters conducted a comprehensive exterior inspection of this 1920s Bayswater villa to assess coating failures and the timber’s condition.

Assessment findings:

• Severe paint failure on most sides with extensive cracking, peeling, and paint bubbling

• Chalky, degraded surface indicating complete breakdown across all sides—the existing paint left hands dirty when touched

• Multiple failing paint layers creating sections of flaking paint that would continue to fail without complete removal

• Original window joinery, deck handrails, and pergola posts in good structural condition but requiring quality preparation to restore

The assessment determined that thorough surface preparation was required to achieving 10+ year performance in Bayswater’s exposed North Shore harbour environment.

Preparation was the most critical part of this project, addressing decades of weathering and paint failure.

Work completed:

• Full property and garden protection with drop sheets and protective coverings

• Complete house wash using specialised cleaning solution to remove salt deposits, dirt, and chalky residue

• Extensive paint stripping to remove failing coatings back to sound timber surface

• Scraping and sanding of all remaining surfaces to achieve a sound surface for priming

• Quality control inspection to ensure all surfaces were properly prepared before priming phase

This preparation stage ensured any new coating system would bond to a sound substrate rather than painting over failing paint.

Primer application focused on creating a durable foundation system designed for coastal exposure.

Priming process:

• Application of Dulux Precision® High Opacity Blocker Stain Blocker to all bare timber surfaces.

• Filling of surface imperfections and sanding to create smooth, uniform finish, then re-primed

• Gap filling and caulking of joins and window surrounds as required. The underlap of weatherboards was left exposed to ensure the home continued to “breathe” and not trap moisture.

The topcoat phase delivered both protective performance and visual transformation.

Application process:

• Two full coats of Dulux Weathershield® were applied to all exterior weatherboards on all sides. Brush, roller and spray techniques were used to ensure maximum coverage.

• Consistent application on deck, handrails, and pergola for a uniformed finish

• Quality control checks throughout application to ensure uniform coverage, consistent colour, and proper film thickness

• Final quality inspection covering all surfaces, edges, and details
• Complete site clean-up including removal of all protective coverings, equipment, and materials
• Walkthrough with homeowner covering maintenance guidance for home
